Sugi-ban
A modern surface that reinterprets nature’s timeworn textures through engineering precision.
Sugi-Ban is a fiber–fiberglass wall panel that recreates the distinctive cracks, grain lines, and age rings found on weathered tree bark through a three-dimensional surface form. With its mineral-stabilized composition and large panel format, it offers high durability and a natural aesthetic for both interior and exterior applications.

Technical DescriptionThe Sugi-Ban Panel is a fiber- and fiberglass-based wall panel developed to reproduce the multidirectional surface deformations characteristic of natural wood bark. The surface topography comprises an organic morphology formed by crack lines, pore transitions, raised grain formations, and erosion-like textures. This complex relief structure is transferred from the master model using high-resolution molding techniques without loss of detail, allowing the panel to reinterpret the dramatic aesthetic of traditional “charred wood” with authentic surface depth.
Its core structure consists of fiberglass layers reinforced with mineral additives. This composite system stabilizes the panel under bending and compressive loads, reducing deformation, local warping, and surface tension issues across wide areas. The mineral components add rigidity while preserving a lightweight profile ensuring efficient engineering performance as well as ease of installation.
Sugi-Ban is optimized for low thermal expansion during temperature cycles. It does not blister, distort, delaminate, or lose form when exposed to thermal variations. The embossed surface geometry facilitates the distribution of impact energies across the panel, enhancing impact resistance and minimizing long-term surface fatigue.
The surface composition is engineered to withstand UV radiation, rain, humidity, water vapor, and chemical atmospheres. It offers high color stability—showing no matting, chalking, or pigment fading under long-term exposure. During freeze–thaw cycles, the internal structure maintains its elastic behavior, enabling the panel to perform reliably outdoors without cracking or separation.
Sugi-Ban’s low surface density transfers minimal load to supporting wall systems and enables broad surfaces to be covered with fewer joints. Its fiber–fiberglass base allows efficient cutting, drilling, and shaping, enabling seamless integration of outlets, lighting fixtures, service channels, and other architectural details. Installation follows a screw + dowel mechanical fastening system, with the stable composite core ensuring strong anchorage and long-term durability. The three-dimensional embossed geometry also assists in distributing load transfer evenly across the surface, extending engineering lifespan.
The Sugi-Ban Panel with its high mechanical strength, UV and atmospheric stability, thermal reliability, acoustically supportive topography, and lightweight yet rigid composite core is designed to offer long-lasting technical performance for both interior and suitable exterior applications.
Its advanced composite structure aligns naturally with sustainable architectural standards. The lightweight composition reduces energy use in production, transport, and installation, while long-term surface stability optimizes material life cycles. Free from harmful chemical substances, the panel supports indoor air quality and promotes user health. These qualities make Sugi-Ban compatible with LEED, BREEAM, and WELL criteria related to material safety, environmental impact, durability, and indoor comfort.
Sugi-Ban blends the expressive character of traditional charred-wood aesthetics with modern engineering precision, bringing both dramatic and timeless surface expression to architectural environments. -
